Offer by P.M. to Mr Kirk
(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, November 3. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) was tonight offered the services of Government departments to investigate the costs of his party’s election promises.
The offer was made by the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) at Hastings when he addressed a public meeting attended by about 400 people.
Mr Marshall rejected Mr Kirk’s criticism that his use of Government departments to work out the likely cost of Labour’s policies was bringing the departments into politics. “It is not doing anything of the kind,” Mr Marshall said. “The Government departments can provide an impartial analysis of the facts for the electors.” Mr Marshall offered the same services to Mr Kirk.
Replying to a Labour Party promise to abolish the Remuneration Authority and replace it with the Arbitration Court, Mr Marshall said the court had no powers to exercise any stabilising influence.
“The court has specifically said it cannot do so,” he added.
