First soccer squad named

Four Christchurch United players and one from New Brighton are included in a 30-man squad announced yesterday to take part in a preliminary World Cup training camp at Auckland on December 16 and 17.

A. Marley, V. Pollard, T. Randles, and B. Hardman are from United, and A, Smith from Brighton.

While naming the players, the national coach, Mr B. Truman, stressed that the squad had been limited to 30 for the December camp only because of finances and accommodation.

“Every player that stated he would be available for my summer training programme will be seen,” he said. “Another camp is to be held early in January to which these will be invited.” Christchurch United has four players in this additional list of 16 — K. France, I. Park, G. Griffiths and K. Doornenbal .

Although the main emphasis at the December 16-17 camp will be on fitness, during which the players will be expected to show Mr Truman that they have carried out their training programmes, a practice match will be played.

With this game in mind, Mr Truman has pencilled the 30 players into two squads of 15. They are: J. Morris; A. Sibley, J. Staines, M. Ferguson, R. Armstrong, M. Tillotson; B. Turner, A. Smith, A. Vest, A. Allanson, N. Ashurst; A. Marley, D. Taylor, G. Brand, I. Ormond.

K. Curtin; G. Bilby, B. Armstrong, I. Hastie, C. Latimour, G. Lake; B. Hardman, T. Randles, V. Pollard, W. Fleet; E. Thomas, W. de Graaf, M. Bland, C. Campbell, D. Tindall.
