P.M. and Mr Lewin settle differences

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 3. The Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) has settled his differences with the Government Statistician (Mr J. P. Lewin) about the comparative increases in consumer prices in various countries.

He said in a statement tonight that he had discussed the matter with Mr Lewin.

“I find that he made his statement with the knowledge and approval of his Minister (Mr Muldoon) which absolves him from any suggestion of involving himself in a political issue,” Mr Marshall said. “I said in my original comment that I did not question the Government Statistician’s figures, but rather the period over which they were taken. “My office has since been able to produce, from em-

bassy sources, figures from the last six months which were not available to Mr Lewin and we both agree

that these figures do show the downward trend in prices in New Zealand which I have claimed.”
