New exchange at Glentunnel
An automatic telephone exchange at Glentunnel, cut into service yesterday afternoon, serves 115 subscribers who formerly relied on heavily loaded lines connected to the Hororata manual exchange, and will give free local calling in the Glentunnel and Hororata exchange districts. The exchange cost about $64,000, with another $50,000 for a new junction cable. Later this year, the junction cable will be extended by 25 miles to provide circuits between the Darfield, Glentunnel, Hororata, and Glenroy exchanges, and will eventually provide circuits to Lake Coleridge. Total costs are estimated at $113,000. Mr C. C. A. McLachlan, M.P., who made the first call yesterday, said that new automatic exchanges would be provided for Kirwee next year, and at Glenroy, Hororata, and Meth ven next year.
