WORKS STRIKE

Union’s call rejected (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 3. Lamb exports might suffer if the unofficial freezing workers’ stoppage at Otahuhu is prolonged. Hellaby Shortland, Ltd, was to begin its second mutton chain next week for the lambkilling season. But today the 1000 freezing workers who walked off the job on Wednesday rejected a call by their union officials to abide by an agreement signed earlier this year by the management and 14 unions that stock at the plant or in transit would be killed before any walk-out or stoppage, and that disputes procedure would be followed. The walk-out left 2600 head of sheep, cattle and pigs at the works. Most were farmed out for grazing. A company spokesman said a prolonged stoppage might mean that export lamb would miss ships to Britain and not fetch traditionally high prices at Christmas and New Year.
