ABORTION ISSUE
Labour concern in Australia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, November 3. Concern is growing within the Australian Labour Party that public support by individual party members for abortion law reform might damage the party’s General Election prospects. A number of party members — including members of Parliament, among them the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Gough Whitlam) — have stated, as a personal view, that abortion in specific circumstances should not be a crime. Official Labour Party policy is that abortion law reform must remain a matter of conscience for individual members of Parliament. Professor Arthur Bums, of the Australian National University, has been an active party member for 26 years, and is also a member of the National Right to Life Association, which has 40,000 members, and which will oppose election candidates who support abortion on request He has agreed to stand as a Labour candidate for the seat of the Australian Capital Territory, now held by Labour.
