Mine disaster: 36 killed
(N.Z.PA..‘Reuter—Copyright) VIENNA, November 3. Mining experts are searching the scarred tunnels of a Rumanian mine today to pin-point the cause of a mysterious explosion which killed 36 miners yesterday.
The men apparently died as methane gas swept through passageways, exploding into a flash fire at the Uricani mining complex in south-western Rumania. Rumanian officials have disclosed only scant details of the tragedy, one of the worst industrial accidents in Eastern Europe in recent years. The blast also injured 12 men, who were taken to hospital, suffering from injuries and bums, according to Agerpres, the official Rumanian news agency. The First Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Hie Verdet) is leading an on-the-spot inquiry commission, assisted by three other members of the Government If blame is apportioned for the accident those held responsible will probably be put on trial.
Informed sources say that President Ceausescu is also likely to visit the area, which is in mountain country about 240 miles from Bucharest. This is the third disaster in Rumania in three years. More than 200 persons died in severe flooding in 1970, and 45 were killed in a landslide last year.
