SITUATION AT 8 P.M.

A depression over the north Tasman Sea is moving east and is expected to cross central New' Zealand on Saturday night. A ridge of high pressure extends from the south Tasman Sea across the South Island.

FORECASTS:

CANTERBURY.—Moderate southerly winds; cloudy about the coast, but fine inland; moderate temperatures. MARLBOROUGH.—Light winds, mainlv easterly; cloudy with moderate temperatures. NELSON.—Light variable winds; cloudy and mild much of the day but rain this evening. BULLER and WESTLAND.—Moderate north-easterlies; cloudy with moderate temperatures most of the day, but rain from this evening. OUTLOOK.—Unsettled, with some rain in all districts.
