Chile
Sir, —The article on, and the news from, Chile on Thursday prompt the cynical reflection that, when Dr Allende first assumed power in Chile, much was made of the point that his was the world’s first elected Marxist government. One of the most piously sanctimonious condemnations of Communist regimes, in the West, has been that they have gained power by violence, the critics forgetting that all social systems triumph historically in this way. The conclusion implicit in this condemnation is that a serious objection to Marxist governments would be removed by their being elected legally. The history of Dr Allende’s presidency glaringly exposes the hypocrisy of this attitude. One can safely predict that should Dr Allende succeed in fulfilling his programme by legislation, his constitutionally peaceful Marxism will be no more acceptable in the West than Dr Castro’s armed revolution which liberated Cuba from Batista’s fascism and United States imperialism.—Yours, etc., M.C.H. Nov. 2, 1972.
