"Fuller life aim of National Govt”
The National Government’s object was to create a richer and fuller life for every New Zealander, said the Post-master-General (Mr H. J. Walker), who is seeking reelection as the National candidate for Papanui, when he spoke at the Bishopdale shopping centre last evening. “Thanks to our policies, the economy is stronger than it ever was, and your continued prosperity and wellbeing are assured if you see that the National Government is returned on November 25,” he said.
Good management had brought New Zealand to its high state of prosperity, and the good life for its citizens. The last 20 years had seen tremendous developments in every section of the ity“A point I want you to note is that in the last 20 years, when there has been all this development, most of the time a National Government was in power,” Mr Walker said.
“The great need for the future is a government that can handle the changes as they come to give New Zealanders a better life, materially, morally, physically, and culturally. We want to develop our resources without pollution or despoliation. “We need progress without protest,” said Mr Walker. “It is essential to have a government of experienced and competent governors. If the country fails to produce this leadership. New Zealand will not be able to enjoy the opportunities offered to us. “The best way is a partnership between the Government and private enterprise, as is done by the National Government.”
Mr Walker said that in other fields, the Government had initiated far-reaching policies—the revision of the Social Security Act to give more purchasing power to all beneficiaries; the equal pay for women legislation based on social justice; legislation controlling the environment; and the automatic personal injury compensation legislation.
"We have introduced a sound system of industrial relations. and though it is meeting with a little opposition
from the Federation of Labour, no unionist has anything to worry about—and everything to gain.” Mr Walker spoke of the National Development Council and said its findings gave New Zealand a proper sense of direction. With the fullest co-operation of all sections of the community, there had been a substantial degree of success to benefit all New Zealanders.
