West Melton corner

Sir,—ln recent months two people have been fatally knocked own on the short stretch of main road passing through West Melton. How many more must die before the authorities , realise that some speed restriction must be enforced here? The slight bend in the road, and the increased volume of traffic of tavern patrons on a Friday and Saturday night make it extremely hazardous to cross the road. The erection, and enforcement, of limited speed zone signs would surely prevent further fatalities and would certainly make it a much safer corner.—Yours, (Mrs) K. SUMMERFIELD. West Melton, October 25, 1972. [Mr A. I. Garriock, traffic superintendent, Ministry of Transport, Road Transport Division, comments: “A limited speed zone in this area would not solve the problem. Pedestrians can be killed even in a 30 m.p.h. area. It is more practical to improve the street lighting in the vicinity and so make pedesrians more visible to drivers of motor vehicles. Such a recommendation has been made to the road controlling authority, and it is understood the ] proposal is being favourably; considered.”]
