Help for Marylands
The Government has yet to decide what additional help it will give to the Marylands Home for intellectually handicapped boys. It is to be hoped that its help will take the form of a generous contribution to the cost of renewing the buildings. But the expectation of Government aid, and the certainty that the State has a duty to share the cost of looking after the boys at Marylands, should not diminish the readiness of Christchurch citizens to answer today’s street appeal for funds. Christchurch should be proud, and grateful, that the home is in this city. Individual compassion and readiness to help should not permit the derogation of a responsibility that belongs to the community as a whole largely because it matters to individuals. A generous response to the appeal today would show the Government that Christchurch people believe in the worth of Marylands. Apart from this, the best result of today’s appeal will be that the home receives a handsome addition to its sadly depleted resources.
