Development action
The time for talking about regional development was past and organised action to achieve it was needed, speakers said at the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce council meeting on Wednesday evening.
“I am sick and tired of talk about regional developmet. It is time we did something. Our chamber and the Canterbury Manufacturers* Association are two pretty powerful bodies, one way and another. Let’s get some action, grab some of the Government subsidy, and get some regional development,” said the vice-president (Mr M. L. Newman). The chairman of the regional development committee (Mr P. M. Mac Shane) tabled a report containing several planks in a proposed regional development programme, and outlining steps taken to ascertain what local bodies and other organisations were doing, or considered should be done, to attract industry. The meeting decided that the president (Mr J. Grigor) and Mr Newman should fill in and return the questionnaire sent by the New Zealand Associated Chambers of Commerce to all chambers on a national programme for regional development.
