Mt Cook sells a DC3
Mount Cook Airlines has sold one of its two DC3s to Airland (N.Z.), Ltd, of Palmerston North for an undisclosed sum. The aircraft, ZK-AOD. was the original flagship of the National Airways in the 1940 s when it bore the name Papango.
Mount Cook Airlines bought it in 1962 and renamed it the City of Timaru at a time when it was running the Oamaru-Timaru service for National Airways.
At Palmerston North the DC3 will be converted into a top-dressing aircraft and as such will be able to carry five tons of fertiliser. Airland (N.Z.), Ltd, have a fleet of about a dozen of these converted DC3s.
The general manager of Mount Cook Airlines (Mr M Comer) said yesterday that the sale of the DC3 did not mean that the company was in any way cutting down on its capacity. The company’s two 748 s were on scheduled services and the DC3s were mainly used as back-up planes, for charter work, or other special purposes. The remaining DC3 will continue in this type of role.
