Britain assured of final place

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent)

PARIS.

Britain took a well-deserved lead in the Rugby league World Cup by beating France, 13-4, at Grenoble yesterday. It has now defeated both Australia and France and is assured of reaching the final on November 11.

The star of the game was the English second row forward, P. Lowe, who scored two superb tries and made the break for a third, by his captain, C. Sullivan. T. Clawson, although off-form with his goal-kicking, converted two of the tries.

For France, J. M. Bonal and V. Serrano kicked penalty goals. The French referee awarded masses of penalties to the French. But their three kickers landed only two goals from eight attempts. Britain defended magnificently and the full-back, P.

Charlton, was brilliant. The French, with plenty of ball from scrums and penalties, were unable to break through as they did against New Zealand on Saturday. Britain will now play New Zealand at Pau on Saturday, and France will meet Australia at Toulouse on Sunday. The competition table is (the top two from the roundrobin series meet in the final): —

w L Goals F A Pts Britain 2 0 40 25 4 France 1 1 24 22 2 Australia 1 1 30 32 2 New Zealand 0 2 14 29 0
