A 22-year-old inmate who ran off after he allegedly hit a Paparua Prison officer about 3.10 p.m. on Wednesday gave himself up to the superintendent of the prison (Mr J. O. Cruse) yesterday morning. Robin Michael Sutherland surrendered about 8 a.m. after spending the night in the piggery at the prison, apparently without leaving the grounds. Sutherland gave himself up after he was spoken to by other inmates.
He appeared in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon before Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., charged with injuring a prison warder, Roger Christopher Jones, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm. Sutherland was remanded without plea to November 9.
