Third wool sale

There is an offering of almost 21,000 bales for the third Christchurch wool sale of the season, which will be held in the Wool Exchange today. In this offering there is a large representation of hogget wools, and according to the spokesman for one wool store there may be more woolly hoggets in this year because lambs were not shorn last year on account of the prices ruling then. The recent level of prices has drawn some wool into the sale to catch the market.

Wools are fairly well grown and of fairly good colour and with less dust than last year, except for wools from isolated areas. In some cases, however, there are signs of tenderness but, according to one authority, there is less cotted wool this year, even in crossbred wools. The later pre-lamb shorn

higher hill country wools in for the sale are reported to be very good and up to the standard of the October sale. On this occasion, however, there is a bigger representation of wools from the arable country’.

The offering is mainly drawn from Canterbury and Marlborough, with smaller selections from the West Coast and Nelson. It is estimated that it could include about 62 per cent of halfbred and Corriedale, with about 30 per cent of crossbreds, slightly more than 5 per cent of Merinos and 2J per cent of Down and Down cross wools.

The catalogues, in order of sale, are: New Zealand Fanners’ Co-operative Association, 3900 bales; Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd, 6591; Wrightson NMA, Ltd, 5003; and Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, 5469; total, 20,963 bales.
