(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 1
John A. Lee, writer, bookseller, and former rebel politician, celebrated his eightyfirst birthday yesterday. “The horns are still there,” he said, “but there’s a halo growing behind them. I’m being hedged in by respectability.” Health, Mr Lee says — “I’ve been lucky; I’ve been thrown down stairs so much its kept me fit.” He is still a widely read author — “Children of the Poor” is about to be reprinted after selling 1200 copies a year for the last nine years. Mr Lee said he would not vote or attend any political meetings this year. “But I listened to Mr Marshall and to Mr Kirk.” Mr Lee said he had received a number of birthday telegrams from well-wishers, and was doing some gardening. “My tomatoes are growing well in the back yard.”
