“Lie down" means “stand up"
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PARIS.
New Zealand and Australian Rugby league players have had trouble communicating with their French hosts, but a note in English giving the programme before the start of their World Cup match in Paris has topped all else. The programme informs officials of both teams that a French Government representative will meet the players, the national “hymn” will be played, and adds in an aside marked “very important,” and in capital letters, after the national “hymn,” teams “must stay laying down.”
Both teams will act on the assumption that the translator means them to remain standing at attention.
