TROTTING Emphasis on speed shown by times of cup runners

the faclthat riThm k°^l ht * r spee< ? and sprint racing is emphasised by the Cun at Addinli™ R ° f 14 runners in next Tuesday’s $40,300 New Zealand ye£s w^Vh Way ’ h ? Ve 7“ records over one mile « Jt ™ a few years ago that it was the exception for any cup runner to have such a record.

This year there are four runners with times better than two minutes for a mile —Arapaho having 1.59 to his credit, Globe Bay and Robalan 1.59 2-5, and Manaroa 1.59 3-5. Manaroa is the latest addition to the ranks of twominute pacers, having taken his record last month at Harold Park just before his return to High bank after a successful campaign in Australia.

Manaroa, at seven years, is not the oldest horse in Tuesday’s race, but he will be making his third attempt to win New Zealand’s premier light-harness event He was a great third in the 1970 contest and last year, when racing like a jaded horse, fifth was the best he could manage. Since the last cup carnival he has gone from strength to strength with three wins in New Zealand and 15 in Australia. His wins included the Dunedin Festival Cup Final in 4:10 1-5, the fastest two-mi le time of any of the cup runners. With the track at Addington faster than it has been 'or years, Manaroa wi.’l probably be required to better his own best for two miles and ®'Bbt have to approach race record °u ? he is to figure in the finish of a truly-run race. Rauka Lad (ninth), Robalan (eleventh), and Jacquinot Bay (last), all contested last year’s cup, their first attempts in the big race. Rauka Lad and Roba'an are improved horses this spring and they are expected to be among the favourites on Tuesday.

Rauka Lad, Hoover and Jacquinot Bay, at eigh: years, are the veterans of the field, with Scottish Charm and Manaroa a year younger. Six-year-olds number six Hundred Pipers, Bella's Command, Globe Bay, Berkleigh, Wag and Robalan — while Arapaho, Royal Belrrer and Royal Ascot are three wellperformed five-year-olds. SIRES Scottish Command and Thurber Frost will each have three representatives in the cup. Scottish Command, a son of U Scott and now a successful sire, contested three cups without much .1 C ?- He was unplaced in 1959 and 1960 and finished

third to Invicta and Patchwork the following year. He will be represented on Tuesday by Hundred Piper’s, Bella s Command and Scottish Charm, one of two mares in the event

Thurber Frost is the sire of Royal Belmer, the other mare in the race, and also Wag and Jacquinot Bay, two likely to be at liberal odds. Johnny Globe, winner of one of the most memorable cups in the last 20 years, will have Globe Bay and Berkleigh to represent him. He has sired the winners of three cups, Lordship (twice) and Spry, a brother to Berkleigh. Details of the cup runners are:—
