600 seats lost
Because of the international requirement for wrestling that the mat be no higher than 1.5 metres off the floor, 600 gallery seats in the Town Hall auditorium cannot be sold when the sport is staged there during the 1974 Commonwealth Games.
Mr J. L. Manning, of the Games ticket office, said yesterday that the front-row gallery seats would be sold as the wrestling area could be seen from them, but this was not so further back. It was planned to have the remainder of the gallery as a standing area, to which there would be door sales at $2, children half price. • The loss of the 600 seats reduces the auditorium seating to 1296, but Mr Manning said it was expected that this [would be a sufficient number to meet the demand at any lone session.
The actual wrestling mat will measure 10 metres by 10 metres and must have rolloffs on each side at a gradient of 45deg. The mat is over a base of rubber-like material.
