Shots fired at ponies

(From Out Own Reporter) TIMARU, Nov. 1

On the assumption that ponies on the Temuka riverbed portion of Mr C. F. Pemberton’s farm have been used as targets—cut legs and other markings having reinforced this belief—farmers have warned trespassers and have erected trespass signs. Mr Pemberton runs a riding school for young people in the district.

He said that young boys, hidden in the riverbed gorse, had apparently fired at the ponies, causing them to scatter and bolt to the far end of the fenced grazing area. Some horses had jumped the fence.

Apart from the injuries which he suspected were caused by airgun pellets, the ponies had been frightened so that it was difficult to persuade them to leave the paddock when they were required for a day's ride.
