General Election
Sir, —With some amusement I listened to Mr Marshall’s election speech. To me he sounded like an ageing magician searching vainly in a bag for something new. I could not believe my ears when he mentioned the “Black Budget.” Surely that is really history now. The 20-year-old voters at this election were only six and seven years old at the time. What will they really remember of it, apart from the name? I know that my six-year-old son won’t remember this year’s Budget in 14 years. All he could say after watching Friday night’s television news was, "How will they get the tar off the ducks?” Perhaps when his generation are ready to vote we may have people who are really concerned about important matters, e.g., conservation and pollution, or will it be too late then?—Yours, etc.,
