Chief sub-editor retires

Mr L C. Fitch retired yesterday after 40 years on the literary staff of “The Press.” Mr Fitch was edu-

cated at Wellington College, the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Canterbury University College, where he graduated in law. It was depression time and Mr Fitch decided on a literary career instead of one in law. He joined “The Press” in 1932 as a reporter, then became a subeditor and spent several years writing leading articles before returning to sub-editing. For the last five years he has been chief subeditor. Mr A. R. Cant, the editor, made a presentation to Mr Fitch on behalf of members of all departments of the newspaper. As ch*ef sub-editor Mr Fitch was also Christchurch morning paper agent of the New Zealand Press Association and the teleprinter service from Wellington yesterday added good wishes to those of reporters and junior sub-editors who were grateful to Mr Fitch for his work as “back stop” and his detection of their errors.
