Another string to his bow

When the considerable energy that Mr D. C. Wilson has devoted towards active participation and administration in cricket and Rugby league is considered, it comes as no surprise that he has answered the call for retiring cricketers to become umpires.

Mr Wilson completed an extensive playing career in March and this season turned his attention towards umpiring. He has excellent qualifications for the task — he was a member of the Sydenham senior squad for two decades from 1940 and has gained international status as a Rugby league referee.

A forceful batsman, Mr Wilson totalled 5813 runs in senior fixtures, his record including three centuries and 27 half-centuries. In more recent years he has been a consistent scorer for the Sydenham President’s grade team. Mr Wilson still serves on the administrative bodies of the Canterbury Cricket Association and Canterbury Rugby League and has been honoured with life memberships by the Sydenham Cricket Club, the Christ-church-Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Club and the Canterbury and New Zealand Rugby Leagues. No doubt Mr Wilson will approach his new umpiring duties With the dedication that has marked his affiliation to his two sports and few eyebrows would be raised if he reached representative level.
