Final race to Follmer

G. Follmer (United States) drove his turbo-charged Porsche to victory in the Riverside “Times" grand prix—the ninth and final race of the 1972 CanAm series. It was Follmer’s fifth win in the series this year. He made sure of the title with iris fourth victory at Monterey two weeks ago.

His average speed for the 61 laps at Riverside was about 122 miles an hour.

Another American, P. Revson, driving a McLaren M2B-Chevy was second, with Follmer’s teammate, M. Donohue (United States) third.

Donohue battled for the lead with Follmer for most of the wav and was in front when he had to puU into the pits for 52 seconds on the fifty-first lap to check a tyre. R. Allison (United States) finished fourth in a Shadow Mk 3 Chevy, D. Hobbs, of Britain, fifth in a Lola T-310 Chevy, and P. Gregg (United States), sixth in a Porsche 917-10.

Three leading foreign drivers were forced to pull out of the race at various stages. D. Hulme (New Zealand), three times the winner of the Can-Am series, withdrew his McLaren on the forty-seventh lap with piston trouble: F. Cevert (France) dropped out on the thirty-eighth i lap with transmission problems; i and J. Oliver (Britain) was lying fourth when he dropped out only two laps from the finish with gearbox trouble in his Shadow Mk 3 Chevy.
