Fast gallop by Trelay

Trelay, one of the early favourites for the New Zealand Cup, galloped a fast half-mile on a firm track at Wingatui yesterday.

With his stablemates, Brown Satin and Greenhide Bill, Trelay is due to leave for Riccarton this morning. Ridden by the light-weight rider, J. Heasley, Trelay completed a round of solid pace work on the plough by running the last half-mile in company with his stablemate, Mellay Vite, in 48 1-Ssec, the opening furlong in 11 3-ssec. The Stewards’ Handicap candidates, Menuetto and Danish Girl, galloped, well, as did the two-year-olds, Unlucky In Love and Dandy Man. Harold Bank, Dmitri, and Tally Simm, candidates for minor events, impressed by their efforts. Over the same ground as Trelay, Danish Girl and Dmitri were together In 48 2-ssec, the first furlong in 11 3-ssec. Menuetto and Unlucky In Love ran their half mile in 48 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37see. Brown Satin, after solid pace work, was accompanied by Greenhide Bill over half a mile In 49 l-ssec, keeping up a fast gallop over the last three furlongs in 37sec. Cromo and Fair Mystery were on terms in 48 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Harold Bank was galloping freely to beat Garcon Vite and Ennis at the end of five furlongs in Imin 2 2-ssec, the last three in 38 3-ssec. El Shub and Smart Mellay ran a solid seven furlongs in Imin 30sec. They were accompanied over the last half mile by Kurquette in 50 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. This time was equalled by Tally Simm, when he shaded Superspan and Bel Hat, which were clear of Clarendon Princess and Menado. The last three furlongs were run In 39 l-ssec.

Dandy Man appeared to have something in hand when he finished alongside Syndawick and Sir Francis at the end of half a mile on the extreme outside of the course proper In 52 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssee.
