RACING Fillies have talents to show up in Derby

Every thing points to the strongest female assault for many years on the New Zealand Derby Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday, an impression deepened when Dhow and Classic Wave galloped impressively at Riccarton yesterday.

Battle Maid, Brown Satin, and Rose Mellay will complete the talented band, five-strong, of fillies in the classic, last won for their sex by Jazz in 1967. Jazz did not manage to carry off the New Zealand Oaks as well, but the Derby-Oaks double was easy for Trial Offer three years earlier.

Classic Wave was in the hands of her Derby rider, J. P. Riordan, when she galloped on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. She started near the mile and a quarter, and was joined near the six furlongs by His Bestone (Molloy) and Bun Tuck (Smith). Bun Tuck dropped away in the straight, leaivng the three-year-olds to finish almost abreast after running the last three furlongs in 37 3-5.

Classic Wave recorded 1.30 1-5 for her last seven furlongs, and for a good way she had run into a strong nor’-wester.

Dhow (Cowles) cleared out from her stablemate and halfbrother, Kayak (Lucas), to complete seven furlongs in 1.31, the last three in 37 2-5. Dhow has thrived since her return from Trentham, where she won the New Zealand Guineas.

Riba 1 d o , Canterbury’s strongest New Zealand Cup hope, started his gallop near the mile and a quarter 45ft out on the course proper. Countess Mellay and Grecian Garden joined in near the six furlongs and helped to set a strong pace for the last halfmile. Ribaldo, with wind assistance in the straight, recorded 1.23 3-5 for his last

nine furlongs, and 49 2-5 for the last half-mile. Golden Sam (D. Sanderson) idled from the nine furlongs to the half-mile in 1.16 2-5, then sprinted home in 50 3-5. Mediate, a strong runner for Takanini in the New Zealand Cup, did striding work over two rounds on the plough in the hands of his race rider. J. P. Riordan, finishing with three furlongs in 44 3-5. Baltic Blue (G. W. Mein), one of only three runners for Riccarton in the Stewards’ Handicap, hurried in from the half-mile on the outside of the course proper in 49. He failed over seven furlongs last time out, but his two earlier starts this season produced wins at six furlongs. Jayson (Sanderson) was shading his stablemate Melaka (Perry) finishing half a mile in 49 1-5. The North Island light-weight, J. Walker, will ride Jayson in the Stewards’ Handicap. Shuddup (Cowles) was easily a match for his elder sister Smack (Lucas) over half a mile, run in 49 2-5. This gallop heightened interest in Shuddup’s race debut in the Welcome Stakes on Saturday. King Commander (Low), a Riccarton two-year-old with a winning form in the Wel-

come Stakes, also recorded 49 2-5. Other gallops were: Course proper Half-mile. —Jury and Sudden Change, 50 2-5; Wynanda and Cup Day, 50 4-5; Alamein and Peak Mellay 51 2-5; Barrier and In the Dark, 52; Seaside Story, 52 2-5; Winbum and Mairee, 51 2-5. On the plough Three furlongs.—Romulet, 39 2-5; Polystyrene and Red Chips, 38 3-5; Margaret’s Glory and Lorenzo, 36 3-5; Guilty Party and Watchman, 38 2-5; Ascotier, 37.
