VOTING AGE ANOMALY
Change sought by Socred
In withholding the vote’ from 18 to 20-year-olds their! elders were breaching the! principle of “no taxation' without representation,” said! the leader of the Social! Credit Political League (Mr! B. Beetham). Announcing the party’s support for the lowering of the voting age to 18, Mr Beetham said that young people were maturing at an earlier age, marrying earlier and undertaking adult responsibilities earlier. They were also better educated and better in- ■ formed than their predeces- I sors. Now, many young ' people did not get their first vote until they were 24, be- ’ cause of the time lag before the vote could be exercised. 1 Legal constraints on)' minors were gradually dis-h appearing, he said, and the! [State treated 18 to 20-year-!, | olds as adults in virtually every respect except in the: .exercise of the “citizen’s! i supreme right.”
