Farewell to Mr Hill

When Mr R. A. Hill was farewelled last evening from his position as national secretary of the Clothing Workers’ Federation, he was described as the only survivor of four outstanding Christchurch trade unionists —the other three being Messrs F. L. Langley, J. S. Roberts and A. B. Grant. The speaker was the president of the New Zealand Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner), who said he had not always agreed with them and commented on occasional “devious ways of thinking.” However, they had all served the interests of the trade union movement with great ability. Although the clothing workers were not militant they had been very successful in award negotiations and this was due to the skill of a master negotiator, said Mr Skinner. (Mr Hill has been their advocate since he became national secretary about 13 years ago).

Other tributes to Mr Hill were paid by the secretary of the F.O.L. (Mr W. J. Knox) and the national president of the clothing workers (Mr I. R. Powell). Gifts were made to his wife.
