Decision on locomotives

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Oct. 31.

Engine drivers were today awarded an extra payment of 15c an hour to handle the powerful DX locomotives. However, their assistants will receive no extra payment.

The Railways Industrial Tribunal rejected the claim of the Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association for extra payments to cover increased production and responsibility, but the chairman (Mr E. A. Lee) found that DX drivers needed new skills. Mr A. T. Gandell and Mr R. W. McKenzie gave dissenting opinions. The secretary of the association (Mr E. W. File) said the decision was “disappointing”. He said the tribunal had ignored the main part of the association’s claim for extra payments for those driving locomotives of more than 1000 h.p.

The locomotives, which arrived in New Zealand in February, have not been used because of the dispute over payment for driving them.
