KAMPALA, October 31.
President Idi Amin announced yesterday that European-owned farms in western Uganda would be subject to compulsory purchase by Ugandans from the middle of November.
According to Radio Uganda, he said that the exercise would begin with the take-over of British-owned farms. The radio said that General Amin “warned those Europeans who have farms in the western region, especially at Fort Portal, Kasese, and Mbarara, and who are calling Ugandans dogs, monkeys and goats, that Ugandans will buy their farms as from the 15th of next month, starting with the British.” There are a number of British-owned tea estates in the Fort Portal area and other parts of the western region. According to the radio, he warned that “Britons who own firms here but are engaging in spying activities,” would be sent out of Uganda immediately. | On that occasion, General Amin specifically accused Britons living in Fort Portal of corresponding with the 8.8. C., and said that if they continued to do so they too might be expelled.
