SHIPPING NEWS Four green-funnel ships in port

Four green and black funnelled ships of the former Holm Shipping Company group were at Lyttelton yesterday morning—purely by chance. They were the Holmburn, Holmdale, and the Holmlea (the latter was formerly the Northern Steam Ship Company’s Seaway Princess). The former Richardson Line vessel Pukeko, also with a Holm Line funnel, was also present. Two other members of the group, the Storm and Squall, formerly belonged to the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, Ltd. The Squall is laid up at Nelson, but the Storm is in service. The former Richardson Line vessel Parera is also in service and the former Holm Shipping Company vessel HolmSark is under charter to the nited Salvage Proprietary at Wellington. Founded in 1880, the Holm Shipping Company, Ltd, absorbed the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, also the Richardson Line, and then was itself swallowed entirely earlier this year by the Union Steam Ship Company. But even today, these small vessels, the only ones remaining in the shrinking group, still wear Holm Shipping Company colours, for reasons noone has yet fathomed. ❖ * ❖ The 553-ton fishery research vessel James Cook is on a brief call at Lyttelton to exchange her scientific members between routine survey work. A regular Lyttelton visitor, the James Cook (formerly Sea Harvester II) is nearly six years old. Run by the Marine Department, she has been recently sampling red cod and plankton in Pegasus Bay. Today, the James Cook will leave Lyttelton for the Chathams to undertake a fortnight’s survey of the tarakihi stocks there. Her scientific party normally comprises one scientist and three technicians. # ❖ At present undergoing a routine survey and overhaul in the Lvttelton Graving Dock is the Timaru Harbour Board’s 1240-ton dredge W. H. Orbell, which is a regular user of Lyttelton’s docking and repair facilities. * * # The former Mitsui-O.S.K Line motor vessel Nagaosan Maru, which has been renamed Maritime Explorer and placed under the Panamanian flag. is discharging Japanese general cargo at Cashin Quay. Included in the 6374-ton vessel’s cargo is a large quantity of Japanese plate ateel for the Ministry of Works at Twizel. The Maritime Explorer is owned by International Maritime Carriers, Ltd. * * ❖ A prominent Jugoslav shipag company, Jadranska Slona Plovidba. whose passengercargo liners are regular Lyttelton callers, re-entered the New* Zealand-European Shipping Association at the beginning of October, according to the association’s chairman (Mr J. H. Meyer). The shipping company withdrew from the association last December, but has been pleased to rejoin, the chairman •aid. In addition to carrying cargo to Jugoslavia, the company’s ships also load from time to time for Venice, Trieste, and certain Mediterranean ports. ❖ * * ARRIVALS J Wanaka (6J a.m.), 2769, Capt. D. C.
