Good day for owner

Royal Cheval completed a good day for her part-owner and trainer, M. Vermeulen, when she beat Rolon Waitaki and Vince in the Farewell Handicap, a race for three-year-olds. Vermeulen is part-owner of the Kaikoura Cup winner, Royal Belmer.

M. Holmes gave Royal Cheval a splendid trail behind Vince in a fast-run race and she paced the 12 furlongs in the good time of 3min 12 2-ssec. Royal Cheval has been entered for I the Riccarton Stakes at the cup meeting. Royal Cheval was pulled wide in the final furlong and she finished too well to beat Rolon Waitaki by a length and a quarter.

Vince battled on for third, and Eblouir made ground for a close fourth. She lost her position when caught behind tiring horses at the half-mile. Lord Gregory looked a danger on the home turn when lying fourth but he

'tired badly to fifth, ahead of Holmfield. Dalestar broke at the end of a furlong, while Hanover Bay broke -and Eblouir and Pegus were checked. Armbro Brent, Aliska, Infallible, Margaret Hanover, and Holmfield lost ground at the start.

Three-year-olds paid the dividends in the Memorial Handicap, Waitaki Star gaining a decisive win over the Derby candidate, Flying Eagle, which made a splendid beginning and had every chance. Bobby Direct ran on for third, clear of Star Guest. The favourite, Eligo, received a poor run and dropped out to eighth.

Later in the President’s Handicap Eligo made most of the pace, but he was run down and beaten a nose by Prince Consort, with Silver Dollar making ground for third, shading Master Scamp and Gigi Lamour. Mr W. L. McKinnon, of Blenheim, had a first winning experience when Garsong, which he bought a few months ago, outstayed Dreamaway by a head in the Stewards’ Handicap. Garsong is trained at Blenheim by S.

F. Black, who obtained the services of D. J. Townley as his driver yesterday. Hal Good proved a class above his rivals in the Hewson Handicap, winning by five lengths from Grizzly Bear and Patrick Sean. E. Crawford caused the surprise of the day when he drove Magnet to a nose decision over Some Dream, driven by his employer, D. G. Jones. Magnet is raced by Crawford in partnership with Miss L. N. Cameron, a daughter of the mare’s trainer, G. Cameron, and Mr B. Johnstone. The partnership leased the mare a month ago for a two-year term. Magnet sprinted up in the back straight and fought on well for her win. Patrick Sean made up ground for third, a nose in front of Rodney Dale, with half a head to Sir Pelver and half a length to Lord Misty, which did not get clear in the straight. Stalemate took the lead on the home turn in the VicePresident’s Handicap and held on well to beat Local View by half a length, with Thurber Command right up third, ahead of Charming.
