RACING North Island has 11 in N.Z. Cup

From the point of view of both numbers and quality the New Zealand Cup field this year should provide the Canterbury Jockey Club with a betting bonanza. When acceptances for the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton next Saturday closed yesterday 20 stayers—ll of them from North Island stables—were left in the field for the $20,600 two-miler.

Wingatui trainers will saddle the first two in the handicap. Trelay, second in the last two New Zealand Cups, heads the list with 8-10 and will concede 91b to his nearest rival, Golden Sam, a proven stayer with a winning record at Riccarton and the winner of his last two races.

Mediate, with 8-0, is the top rated northerner. This Takanini - trained stayer earned himself favour for the event when he beat a useful field in the New Zealand Cup and Derby Trial at Motukarara last Saturday. Kartika, from Hawera, and Ribaldo, from Riccarton, are lib below Mediate. Two recent wins convinced the connections of Kartika that she was New Zealand Cup material. This was emphasised when she managed a mile and a half successfully and with ridiculous ease in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham last time out.

A month ago Ribaldo looked as if he would be one of the south’s top contenders. He lost some prestige with two moderate middle-distance runs on turning tracks but redeemed himself to some extent with a sound effort for third to Mediate and His Bestone on the roomier Motukarara course last Saturday.

The Foxton-trained Arcon might not be the most consistent stayer in racing but his record this spring includes a win over Magnifique, one of the ruling favourites for next Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, in the Higgle Handicap at Wanganui last month. On that performance alone he must be rated one of the stronger possibilities. Two other northerners certain to come in for solid backing are Dyak and Classico. The former is one of the proven two-milers in the field. This Matamata-trained stayer won the two-mile Chalmers Handicap at Trentham in March. The runner-up in that event was Kartika and the third place-getter was Golden Sam.

The New Zealand Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double. The second leg of this double will be the Stewards’ Handicap, which has attracted a handy field of 14. North Island stables will put five into this field, including the first four in the handicap. Other major attractions on Saturday will be the $13,000 New Zealand Derby Stakes and the Welcome Stakes, for two-year-olds. The north will be represented by six of the 10 acceptors for the three-year-old classic. There will be a concession double for course patrons only on the Waimairi Highweight and the Spring Plate.
