Borstal inmate dies in fire

HAMILTON, October 30.
An 18-year-old youth was burnt to death in a cell fire at Waikeria Borstal early this morning. He was
TOM ROBERT DAVEY His 20-year-old cell mate was dragged to safety, and was in a satisfactory condition in Waikato Hospital tonight. Prison officers saw smoke issuing from the cell about 7.15 a.m. They dragged one youth to safety, but the heat prevented them getting to the other youth. The body of the youth was later found lying on the floor, near the bed.
The prison superintendent, Mr L. B. Harder, later praised the prison officers and the inmate fire crew for “displaying great courage in going into a red-hot cell and bringing one inmate to safety.” The fire was contained to the cell. The only damage was to clothing, bedding and a dresser. Prison officials have refused to comment on the cause of the fire. Hamilton detectives have been called in to investigate it.
