Political TV link spoiled
Telephone switchboard operators for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation in Christchurch ware swamped with complaints last evening after atmospheric disturbance disrupted a country-wide link for a political television programme.
The programme was the opening of the National Party campaign for the General Election by the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) in Whangarei. lonospheric disturbance broke the link between Wharete, near Woodville, and Kau Kau, in Wellington. Picture reception in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin was very poor as a result and eventually was lost completely. The three stations continued with an emergency programme of slides while still relaying audio transmissions, which were not affected at all.
The link with Wellington was re-established for another series of slides before full communication was restored.
The telephone operators in Christchurch said there were “too many calls to count” and the situation was the same in Wellington and Dunedin. “The Press” also received telephone calls about the disruption.
