Fairlie favoured for Davis Cup
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON
The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association management committee last night agreed that the Auckland professional, B. E. Fairlie, should be eligible for future New Zealand Davis Cup teams.
Two months ago committee members had expressed doubt that Fairlie would be considered for future Davis Cup teams. The decision about Fairlie came after a letter he had written to the chairman (Mr I. D. Wells) had been read to the meeting. In the letter Fairlie agreed to play O. Parun in a N.Z.B.C. challenge match at Central Park, Wellington, on December 17. Fairlie said he was coming back to rest but would play in this match and also in the New Zealand Open tournament in Auckland in January. Parun had also written to Mr Wells. He requested permission to miss the Auckland championships to play in the $50,000 Australian Open. The meeting was sym-
pathetic towards Panin’s request, but Mr Wells said that the Auckland association would have to agree before Parun could make arrangements to play in Australia.
The meeting also agreed that a hard-court championships in Northland could be named the New Zealand hardcourt championships.
