LEADER’S COMMENT
New Democrats on TV
(N.Z. Preu Aaiociatton)
NELSON, Oct. 30.
The full list of the New Democrat Party’s 87 candidates for the General Election would be announced tomorrow, said the party’s leader (Mr J. B. O’Brien) today. He was commenting on the assertion of the party’s candidate for Lyttelton, Mr R. R. Scarth, that he was standing to bring the party’s total to 87 so that it would have time on television.
Mr O’Brien said that he was not upset about Mr Scarth’s remark—he commended him for his honesty. He confirmed that he had objected to the Social Credit League, with 8 per cent of the vote, getting 20 per cent of the television time available.
Mr O’Brien said that the Director-General of the N.Z.B.C. (Mr L. R. Sceats) had made it clear that unless 87 candidates were put up no television time would be granted.
