China refuses novelist visa
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 30. The Nobel Prize-winning novelist, Pearl Buck, who spent 40 years of her life in China, has been refused a visa to pay a last visit to Peking. The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, in a letter to Miss Buck, who is 80, said that her works, which are mostly set in China, had for a long time shown “distortion, smear, and vilification towards the people of China and their leaders," according to the Newspaper Enterprise Association, which is publishing the writer’s latest novel, “China Past and Present.” Miss Buck, who underwent surgery last month, is now in a rest home in Burlington, Vermont.
