Aust. floods ease

(N.Z, Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 30. The rain over the east coast of Australia eased late yesterday, and it appears that the floods which have taken two lives have now passed their peak. Rivers are still running high in northern New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland, but are expected to begin receding if no more rain falls. Divers yesterday found the body of a boy, Jamie Duggan, aged 18 months, who was drowned in a flooded creek in the Brisbane suburb of Windsor on Saturday. At Tuckombil, in northern New South Wales, a farmer, Mr Allen Joseph Maxwell, aged 53, was drowned when his truck was washed off a causeway. The Pacific Highway, the main coast road linking Sydney and Brisbane, is still cut by floodwaters in at least five places. Eight rivers in northern New South Wales have burst their banks, and dozens of families have been taken to safety in flood-hit townships.
