PEKING TALKS
Atmosphere relaxed
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PEKING, Oct. 30. The British Foreign Secretary (Sir Alex DouglasHome), who arrived in Peking yesterday for a fiveday visit, is holding a second round of talks with Chinese Government officials today. The talks are expected to be centred on Asian and Middle East affairs, including the moves towards ending the Vietnam war, and the possible role of Britain and China in supervising a ceasefire, or in an international conference.
Yesterday’s discussions mainly concerned European affairs, and lasted about two hours.
British sources say that there was a relaxed exchange of views, Sir Alec DouglasHome briefing his counterpart (Chi Peng-fei) on the recent summit of the European Common Market in Paris. The conversation changed during the last halfhour of the talks to the Middle East and the Soviet Union withdrawal of military advisers from Egypt. Tonight, Sir Alec DouglasHome, who is the first British Foreign Secretary to visit China, will be the guest of honour at a banquet in the Great Hall of the People, where the talks are being held.
