TROTTING Te Kao appeals in second leg of Kaikoura double

Twelve months ago Te Kao, driven by M. Holmes, caused an upset when she won the Farewell Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s annual meeting. Today, the same combination will be a popular fancy in the Hotelkeepers’ Handicap, the second leg of the main double.

The club is unlucky that scratchings have reduced the field to two-dividend proportions, but for all that the result is far from being a foregone conclusion.

Te Kao raced at Oamaru last Monday, finishing seventh after being tailed off at the half-mile, a smart run as the track conditions did not suit her. This small field should enable her to use her speed and stamina to the best advantage. Curragh’s Dream will have plenty of supporters after his last-start win at the recent Greymouth meeting. He could well try for an all-the-way win. False Angel beat all but Great Time in a mobile-start race at Forbury Park, a placing which entitles her to consideration, and Royal Lee’s third to Speedy Guest at Oamaru when having his first start for the season suggests that he will be no forlorn chance. Rauka Lad, Robalan and Royal Ascot form a likely trio in the first leg, the Kaikoura Cup, a race in which Berkleigh, Globe Bay and Lightsey must be considered.
