Wheelchair facilities
Public telephone booths with facilities for persons in
wheelchairs are being sought by the Council of Soroptimist Clubs of the South-West Pacific.
The council’s president, Miss Meryl Caldwell Smith (Sydney), said in Christchurch yesterday that the engineering department of the Postmaster-General’s office in Sydney had already worked out a design from which such booths could be produced. Dome-topped booths, under which wheelchairs could be manoeuvred, were envisaged, she said. The booms would have the telephone mouthpiece on a bench about 30in high and a side shelf for placing papers, handbag, and parcels while the call was being made. “We would like to see these booths on railway stations and in other public places wherever needed,” she said.
