Documentary on Chichester

Sir Francis Chichester was probably one of the world’s greatest navigators and the only man ever to have circumnavigated the world alone, twice. He did it first by aeroplane some 36 years before he attempted it under sail.

In “The Lonely Sea and The Sky,” screening from all channels on Sunday, something of Chichester's adventures is recalled.

The documentary cuts backwards and forwards between his two great adventures, following him by plane and then by boat as he sets record after record for solo achievements.

The producer, Christopher Doll, had the unique distinction of being able to sail with Chichester to shoot some of the sailing sequences himself. Then he was fortunate enough to unearth the sole flyable 1930 Gypsy Moth aircraft left, with which to recreate some of the flying sequences.
