Grant to Papua
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. New Zealand will make a grant of $50,000 to PapuaNew Guinea for famine relief, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Sir Keith Holyoake) has announced in a statement.
This is in response to an official appeal from PapuaNew Guinea to help meet a state of emergency in which more than 50,000 people are homeless and facing famine. Sir Keith Holyoake said that a lengthy drought followed by a succession of severe frosts had devastated local food supplies in the highland areas of the territory. The situation had been aggravated by subsequent heavy rains which had led to widespread flooding.
