SQUAD OF 23 IN SOFTBALL
A squad of 23 softballers was selected yesterday, and from this 14 will be chosen as Canterbury’s representative team for the Beatty Cup tournament after Christmas.
Unlike last year, most senior players were available for selection, but the notable ommissions were D. Bradbury (United) and D. Chee (Richmond). Chee is to be married shortly and Bradbury, perhaps the best pitcher in the province, has work commitments.
The squad will train at the Papanui Domain next Sunday, under the watchful eye of the selectors, Messrs I. R. Pollock. K. Bingley and R. Hall. Afterwards, a PossibleProbables match will be played.
Papanui has the most representatives in the squad, with seven players included.
Richmond, this season’s competition leader, has five, Deep Freeze four, United three, Western Suburbs three, and Papanui Aces one. The squad is:—J. Summers, J. Krauss, S. Richardson, A. G. Mansfield (Deep Freeze); D. Rea, K. Smith, G. Panagiotidis, P. McFarlane, T. Smith (Richmond); R. Winfrey, A. Sweat, G. Dunn, G. Roberts, D. Phillips, G. Phillips, D. Eager (Papanui): D. Dawe, B. Mountford, K. Thorne (United); R. Johnston, M. Irie, R. Fife (Western Suburbs); A. Ruruku (Papanui Aces). The Canterbury team will be chosen after the trial match on Sunday.
