Suburban matches

Bowlers still held the whip hand when the second round of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s senior competition began on Saturday.

The promoted team, Woolston W.M.C., had last season’s champion side, Meri-vale-Papanui, struggling hard for runs and after MerivalePapanui declared at nine down for 83, Woolston looked well placed when 41/2. However, a fine spell of bowling by M. Willis (8/29) kept Woolston’s total to 112. Heathcote made a bright startscoring its first 100 in only 95 minutes—against Waltham, but then wickets fell quickly, and it declared at eight for 125. Waltham began its first innings soundly, but the bowlers then got on top and Waltham was dismissed for 91. Sumner made a slow, yet steady start to its innings against Hornby. but then slumped badly and was dismissed for 85. In reply, Hornby batted briskly to be 140 for seven at stumps. Beckenham ended the day well placed against Burnside. Bumside batted first and made 111, and. with 25 overs completed, Beckenham was 122/3. Scores: SENIOR A Merivale-Papanul 83/9 dec.
