‘Dumping’ of N.Z. peas (N.Z. Press Association) CANBERRA, Oct. 29. Peas and beans should be exempted from the New Zea-land-Australia Free Trade Agreement, Senator A. Lillico said in Canberra at a public hearing of the Senate Standing Committee on Trade and Industry. Peas and beans from New Zealand were being dumped in Australia, he said. “Both countries are selfsufficient and indeed have a surplus for export. The situation is farcical.” He said that one year 120 m lb of peas were grown in Australia. The local consumption was 80m lb, and in the same year several million pounds were imported from New Zealand. Senator Lillico questioned the composition of the joint pea and bean panel. It was a “loaded committee,” he said, dominated by processors who were interested only in exporting as much to Australia as possible. And with few exceptions all Australian and New Zealand processors were linked by mergers. British Tobacco represented Australia on the panel and Watties, Ltd, represented New Zealand processors, and yet these companies were merged.
