Chch West leads in women’s softball

After the first completed round. Christchurch West is the only unbeaten team in the senior women’s softball competition. On Saturday it had to fight hard to beat Western Suburbs, 2-1, but yesterday it clearly beat Monowai 7-2. On Saturday, Monowai had to play up to its best to beat Burnside, 3-0, and yesterday Spreydon recorded its first win for the season with a 3-2 victory over Western Suburbs. Points are: Christchurch West 4 (27 runs for. 6 against), Monowai 3 (31, 10), Western Suburbs 1 (14, 20), Burnside 1 (9, 26), Spreydon 1 (9, 28). Christchurch West v. Western Suburbs K. Stinson, the Christchurch West pitcher, figured prominently in the first innings. She dismissed the three Western Suburbs batters and then as first batter for her side scored a long home run. In the second innings P. Chambers bunted and made third base on an overthrow and scored on a bunt by R. McGill. However, tigehter fielding held Christchurch West scoreless for the remainder of the game. Western Suburbs entered its last innings trailing by two runs. G. Larson hit on and A. Coffey drove to the outfield. Both advanced on a bunt and Larsen scored when R. Palermo drove to short stop. However. A. Huriwai was struck out, for Christchurch West to win 2-1, without taking its last bat. Stinson faced 28 batters and gained seven strike-outs and gave up four hits. M. Rhodes faced 26 batters and gained one strikeout and gave up four hits. Monowai v. Burnside In a game which produced many good catches, Monowai took advantage of errors to score three runs and hold Burnside scoreless. Monowai opened its

scoring on the second Innings when a series of overthrows enabled A. Teagen to score and she was followed home by V. Morgan after a hard drive by B, Makinson.

Burnside looked dangerous In its fourth innings when it had D. Joplin and P. Slave on bases hut two catches and a force-out held the side scoreless. In the fifth innings Monowai’s S. Stead scored on a fielder’s chase. Monowai did not take its last bat to win 3-0 in a hard-fought game. Makinson (Monowai) faced 30 batters and gained six strikeouts and gave up two walks and two hits. J. Kilburn also faced 30 batters and gave up three walks and four hits. Spreydon v. Western Suburbs. Spreydon batted first and P. Nalepa made first and advanced on a hit by P. Gardner. Both scored on a home run by B. Weakley. Spreydon failed to add to its score for the remainder of the game, and Western Suburbs was well held in the field until the fifth innings when, with two batters out and the bases loaded, an overthrow at first allowed two runners to score. Spreydon tightened Its play in its last two innings to stay ahead. 3-2.

H. Thyme (Spreydon) faced 32 batters and gave up three hits and one walk. She gained one strike-out, while M. Rhodes (Western Suburbs) faced 29 batters and gained two strike-outs and gave up eight hits.

Christchurch West v. Monowai Christchurch West batted first and R. Stinson and E. Ching hit home runs. A home run on errors by A. Hase came in Christchurch West’s second innings and then Ching hit her second homer of the game in the third. She was followed home on errors by M. Lee. In its fourth Innings Monowai scored when A. Phillips advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a hit by W. Beale. M. Lee, first batter up in Christchurch West’s fifth innings, made second on an overthrow and scored after hits by A. Hase and C. Quested. Then Quested came home on a hit by L. Watts. Monowai took its last bat trailing by six runs. Its first batter, Beale, hit a three-bagger and after a catch she scored on a drive by K. Phillips but the next two outs were taken without addition to the score. For Christchurch West, Stinson faced 25 batters and gained five strike-outs and gave up two walks and three hits. B. Makinson faced 36 batters and gained four strike outs and gave up one walk and 10 hits. i
